In a daring and unexpected move Spanish coach Emillio Sanchez decided to send Fernando Verdasco out to play against Jose Acasuso in the first reverse singles competition match that could have won or lost the Cup for Spain. Verdasco won in 5 sets in a match of nerves against the Argentine player who was called into action when Juan Martin del Potro was declared unfit to play. Both finalists were nervous under the immense pressure of the match, but it was Verdasco who showed himself to be the more experienced and the higher ranked player of the two. The score was 6-3, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, and the match lasted 4 hours. For Verdasco it will rank as the most important victory of his career, and while the quality of the tennis left much to be desired, it will go down in Davis Cup history as one of the most pressure packed matches ever played. Between them Verdasco and Lopez won all three points in Spains 3-1 win over the heavily favoured Argentine team, and showed themselves to be a strong young pair for the team to build upon for the future. Playing without Rafael Nadal, Spain demonstrated its team strength, and the depth of tennis within the country. The loss will be a bitter pill to swallow for Argentine, and you can rest assured that there will be some significant changes made before they meet the Netherlands in the first round of the 2009 competition.
