Querry in the spotlight at Indy.

by on Jul.21, 2009, under Sam Querrey

querrey_0430Big-serving Californian Sam Querrey is happy to be carrying the load for the US at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships in the injury absence of Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick.

The third seed and two-time semifinalist started his campaign for the title with a defeat of veteran Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-4 to lead fellow seeds Marc Gicquel of France (seventh) and number eight Uzbek Denis Istomin to opening victories Monday.

Querrey is the highest-ranking American in the home field after Roddick withdrew due to the hip flexor injury which bothered him during his All England club loss to Roger Federer a fortnight ago.

“Maybe the spotlight is on me a bit but I don’t mind at all,” said Querrey. “Of course it would be better if Andy, James (Blake), Mardy (Fish) and the Bryan brothers were here. But they have other things going on.”
