wozniak__180061gm-aThe last Canadian woman to win the Canadian Open was Faye Urban in 1969 – and Wozniak, ranked 40th in the world, is the first Canadian-born woman in 13 years to be ranked high enough to get direct entry into the main draw. Not since the days of Carling Bassett and Hurricane Helen Kelesi have hopes been as high. As tournament director Karl Hale noted, she has a good draw.

“I didn’t know that,” Wozniak said when informed about the dearth of Canadian success in this event. “Hopefully now, whenever the time is right, I can win here at home.”

Wozniak, from Blainville, Que., turns 22 on Sept. 7. She joined three icons of the game in a press conference just before she and Seles teamed up for an exhibition doubles match against Navratilova and Williams. The event was held to celebrate Seles’ induction into the Rogers Cup Hall of Fame, which is really just a nice way of celebrating the significance this event and this city have for Seles.
