Belgian Yanina Wickmayer gave herself an early birthday present, defeating Czech Petra Kvitova in Sunday’s final at the Generali Ladies Linz tennis event to capture her second career WTA singles title.
Wickmayer, a wildcard entry and seeded third, earned a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over the unseeded Kvitova on the indoor hardcourts at Linz’ Intersport Arena. She became the third Belgian to win this tournament and the first since Justine Henin in 2002.
A surprise U.S. Open semifinalist, Wickmayer, who turns 20 on Tuesday, won her maiden title earlier this year on the red clay at Estoril as an unseeded player.
Wickmayer improved to 3-1 lifetime against Kvitova and took home $37,000 for the victory.
The 19-year-old Kvitova was appearing in just her second career final. She titled at Hobart at the start of the season.
