US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will fine-tune his Australian Open campaign at Melbourne’s Kooyong Classic in January.
Del Potro replaced Marcos Baghdatis in the eight-man field after the Cypriot decided he needed to enter more tournaments with rankings points at stake after an injury-riddled year.
Baghdatis will now contest the Sydney International in the week before the first grand slam tournament of 2010.
Ankle and back problems have hampered Baghdatis this year, with his world ranking dropping to No.45.
“It is most unfortunate to lose Marcos from an already announced field, but I understand his situation,” Kooyong Classic tournament director Colin Stubs said.
“This event was instigated to provide the world’s top players with the best possible preparation for the Australian Open, but it will not always suit.”
The eighth place in the field for the round-robin event at Kooyong is being kept open for world No.1 Roger Federer, who has yet to finalise his pre-Australian Open schedule.
