Soderling ready to play if Roddick’s knee acts up.
by bahamaderek on Nov.16, 2009, under Andy Roddick, Barclay London Final, Robin Soderling
Robin Soderling, the first alternate, was fairly unknown outside tennis until this season’s French Open where he defeated Rafael Nadal, the defending champion, in the fourth round, and went on to reach his first grand slam final, where he was beaten by Roger Federer.
The second alternate is France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the beaten finalist at last season’s Australian Open, and the current world No 10.
Even if Soderling and Tsonga did not play all week, they would each receive £40,000 just for being in London. If results go his way in London, Nadal could end the year as the world No 1, since the Majorcan missed last season’s tournament through injury and does not have any points to defend.
If Juan Martín del Potro, the US Open champion and Argentina’s world No 5, has a good tournament, he could end the year inside the top four, bumping Britain’s Andy Murray down the rankings.
