Spain’s Fernando Verdasco has withdrawn from the Capitala World Tennis Championship exhibition event to be held at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex from December 31, 2009 – January 2, 2010 on medical advice, and will be replaced by Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka. He joins a star-studded line-up of the world’s best players including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Nikolay Davydenko and Robin Soderling.
“Unfortunately, I have decided – in conjunction with my coaches – that I need to make several adjustments to my schedule for the beginning of 2010,” Verdasco said in a statement. “Throughout the year I have suffered from a foot injury for which I was to have surgery after the US Open. My doctors advised me to reconsider the surgery and to make a decision after the Davis Cup Finals. Regardless of whether or not I have the surgery, I will need to take a significant time of rest and thus I will not be able to participate in the Abu Dhabi tournament.”
Verdasco has withdrawn following adjustments to his schedule caused by a persistent foot injury which affected the Spaniard throughout the season.
He remains as a competitor in the ATP finals in London where Tsonga is now the next substitute player following the withdrawl of Andy Roddick, and his replacement by Soderling.
