The American girls continued their triumphant march through the 2009 Dunlop Orange Bowl as unseeded Nicole Gibbs, Robin Anderson, Lauren Davis, Ellen Tsay and Madison Keys advanced to the round of 16 at Grade A event in Key Biscayne. 16-year-old Nicole Gibbs and her compatriot Ellen Tsay produced two major upsets on a hot and humid Wednesday, in defeating second seed Timea Babos of Hungary and fourth seed Silvia Njiric of Croatia respectively.
In a rematch of the Canadian Open’s semifinal, Gibbs displayed all her talents on the hard courts of Key Biscayne as she prevailed over her Hungarian opponent once again. The American battled back from a set down and gave the nervous Hungarian little space to develop her own game, winning 36 62 62. Wild card Ellen Tsay ended the hopes of another title candidate as she defeated Gerdau Cup champion and fourth seed Silvia Njiric of Croatia in a dramatic three set marathon, 67 63 75. Tsay went down 1-3 in the decisive set but produced an excellent defensive display, using accurate lobs and powerful forehands to pin her opponent back and ultimately secure an historical win.
Wild card Lauren Davis, from Cleveland, advanced to the third round by beating Nour Abbes of Tunisia 62 61 whilst her compatriot 16-year-old Robin Anderson saw off qualifier Antonela Susak of Croatia, 64 63. Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, who was runner-up at Grade 1 Yucatan Cup last month, eased past Polina Leykina (RUS) 63 63, while Adriana Perez of Venezuela and Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand scored straight set victories against Noel Scott of USA and Anna Orlik of Belarus, respectively. Eighth seed Nastja Kolar of Slovenia is the only surviving seed in the bottom half of the girls’ draw, as she scored a straight sets victory over Elina Svitolino of Ukraine, 62 75.
In the top half of girls’ draw, 14-year-old American Madison Keys, the winner of Grade 1 Banana Bowl, emphatically swept aside Canadian Katarena Paliivets, 60 61. All other seeds – Kristina Mladenovic, Valeria Solovieva, Daria Gavrilova, Heather Watson, Saisai Zheng, Yulia Putintseva and Ajla Tomljanovic – claimed their spots in the round of 16.
