Former Australian Open finali
st Marcos Baghdatis downed American Mardy Fish 7-5 7-5 in the first match of the day at Pat Rafter Arena.
After the match Baghdatis said he was happy to come away with a win despite not being overjoyed with his form.
“It wasn’t my best match, but I’m very happy with the way I played today. It’s my first match since two and a half, three months, so I’m pretty happy,” he said.
Baghdatis moves into the second round where Czech fourth seed Tomas Berdych lies in wait after ousting Australian qualifier Nick Lindahl in the first round.
Recently Baghdatis has been working on improving his fitness ahead of the Australian summer and believes that winning a major is not out of the question.
“I see myself winning a Grand Slam, I don’t know when, but, I don’t know if it’s coming this year or not but I’m waiting for it.”
