Juan Martin Del Potro was in impressive form as won his first-round clash at the SAP Open in San Jose. The Argentinian got the better of Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-3 6-2, indicating that he is getting back to his US Open-winning form following his lengthy injury lay-off.

Elsewhere, three big-name seeds were dumped out on a day of shocks. Home favourite Sam Querrey, the number three seed, was beaten 7-6 (7/6) 6-3 by Lukas Lacko. Xavier Malisse, one seed down from Querrey, put up less of a fight as he lost 6-3 6-4 to Milos Raonic, and the sixth seed, Benjamin Becker, went down 6-3 7-6 (7/2) to Lithuania’s Richard Berankis.

There were also wins for Kei Nishikori over Jan Hajek and Brian Dabul over Alejandro Falla.
